Project Overview

Side by Side Special School, nestled in the heart of the London Borough of Hackney, is a unique community school catering to children from the age of 2 to 19. This inclusive institution actively engages parents and the community in the educational journey. The school comprises an Integrated Nursery, Special School, Kodesh (Jewish Studies), English as a Second Language, Therapy services, and a Transition into Mainstream Education program.

Timotay Playscapes seamlessly aligns with Side by Side’s ethos by providing outdoor solutions that cater to the diverse needs of their students. The Integrated Nursery benefits from play environments that encourage children, regardless of abilities, to learn and play side by side. Timotay’s commitment to inclusivity is mirrored in the Special School’s tailored designs, promoting both educational and therapeutic interventions for children with EHCPs. The emphasis on sensory-based Kodesh sessions aligns with Timotay’s approach, ensuring outdoor spaces cater to diverse learning styles.

Moreover, Timotay supports Side by Side’s goal of mainstream integration by creating outdoor spaces that foster social skills and self-esteem. The provision of an Afterschool Club aligns with the school’s commitment to holistic development, offering varied activities that complement Side by Side’s dedication to expanding experiences for all students.

The Outcome

Timotay Playscapes worked with this setting to create an immersive, inclusive and bespoke solution – utilsing the rooftop space.

The project required a unique skill set in order to deliver the project on a rooftop and also within a SEND setting. Consideration was needed at all times for the children within the school, to minimise disruption at all times.

The rooftop space has utilised previously non-functioning space, and created a unique learning opportunity for the children.
