A garden display designed by Northamptonshire landscape specialists Timotay has been awarded a prestigious silver award at BBC Gardeners’ World Live event for the second year running, which took place at NEC Birmingham from 13th – 16th June 2019.
Timotay was selected to feature in an exclusive area of the BBC Gardeners’ World Live show at the NEC in Birmingham. The high-profile Gardeners’ World Live attracted over a hundred thousand gardening enthusiasts between June 13th and 16th. Timotay – whose headquarters is in Wollaston, Wellingborough – was amongst just five contractors chosen by expert judges to feature their design in the high profile ‘APL Avenue Show Garden’, hosted by the Association of Professional Landscapers.
“It’s a real honour for Timotay to have been selected as just one of five contractors to feature in APL Avenue at BBC Gardeners’ World Live; and to be awarded a silver award for a second year running is a true reflection of the skill set, hard work and determination from our team- I am extremely proud!” . “The competition was fierce, and we were delighted to have featured amongst such an elite group.” said company director Tim Elwood.
This year’s challenge to companies competing for one of the five places in the ‘APL Avenue Show Garden’ was to design an Asian-themed garden. Timotay’s Landscape Manager Robyn Brookes and Design Manager Keith Walmsley combined to come up with an eye-catching submission, which was constructed at the NEC for the Gardeners World Live Show.
Inspired by South East Asian adventures, the garden combined a tropical planting palette with a simple yet effective selection of natural hard landscape materials. The antique silver paving, yellow paddle stones, and Caledonian boulders were selected to contrast with and compliment the charred timber features within the design.
The traditional Asian technique Yakisugi used to preserve timber created the dramatic textured black finish to the statement pieces. At the centre of the garden water cascaded into a shallow pebble pool, where the sound could be enjoyed from the terrace. The intention of this was to recreate the experiences from the landscapes of Indochina.
“APL Avenue always featured an incredible collection of Show Gardens, and this year was no exception,” said Bob Sweet, Horticultural Director of BBC Gardeners’ World Live. “The five selected landscapers presented fantastic designs and built to a very high standard.”
The new globetrotting theme is a wonderful way of illustrating to visitors how travel memories can be used to influence the look and feel of their space, offering up an opportunity for unusual and exciting designs that still work in an average urban or suburban back garden.
