A Life for Lewis – A Domestic Sensory Play Garden

Project Overview

We had the recent pleasure of completing this Domestic Sensory Garden for 12-year-old, Lewis Herbert of Northamptonshire. At 3 months of age, Lewis was diagnosed with a condition called West Syndrome which later developed into Lennox Gastaut Syndrome (LGS), an extremely rare form of epilepsy which results in Lewis experiencing multiple and varying seizures on a daily basis and global development delay.

Due to Lewis’ condition, which to date has been resistant to all medication and therapies he requires 24-hour care, which he receives from his parents Gary and Lexi. Due to his severe disabilities and restrictions on the wheelchair access in and around his home, up until recently, Lewis has been isolated to the indoors, unable to venture outside with his parents, brother and sister.

During 2015 the family and friends of Lewis pledged to fundraise through the Tree Of Hope Children’s Charity to support their dream to create a bespoke sensory play garden for their son and in-doing so enhance his quality of home-life.

The Outcome

Through tireless fundraising efforts which included fundraising campaigns, the Herbert family reached their goal and set-about working with us to begin to visualise their dream outdoor space.
The multi-sensory bespoke play garden was designed to not only allow Lewis to explore and enjoy his outdoor space but also to try and aid his development. The play garden includes the following features and sensory products:

• Interactive Water Feature
• Totem Mirrors
• Raised Garden Beds
• Sensory Planting
• Sensory Lighting
• Artificial Grass
• Bespoke Paved Rainbow Walk
• Bespoke Pergola Seating Area with Coloured Reflective Roof Panels

Completed in March 2016, Lewis has already spent much time enjoying his new sensory garden, he is particularly fond of his water feature, sensory flowers, sensory lights and mirrors.

Client Feedback

Gary Cornhill, Design Director for Timotay Playscapes said “It is always touching to know that we have created something to make a difference and give a family a better life together. Through consultation, design and then construction we have created a sensory garden for a lovely family, truly devoted to making their home a place where their son can be included in both indoor and outdoor activities. This garden for Lewis allows him to explore a multi-sensory environment, including; sound, light, sight, reflection, touch and smell through a number of play items designed specifically for the Lewis and his family. We look forward to staying in touch with the Herbert’s and hope they have great fun in their new garden.”

Gary and Lexi, Lewis’ parents said “Lewis is now spending quality time in his garden with the whole family, which is absolutely amazing for us all. This is something which most people take for granted, but for him to be able to access the garden means the absolute world to him and our whole family. He looks so happy, relaxed and chilled, which is so incredibly special for us to see, we look forward to spending many happy times together in our new garden.

We would like to say a huge thank you to the whole team at Timotay for all their advice and hard work throughout the project. Without their expertise and support, Lewis’ dream of a wheelchair accessible sensory garden would not have been able to come true. We would also like to put on record how incredibly impressed we were with Duncan and Paul. Their workmanship was of an extremely high standard and they were always very approachable and helpful (no matter how stupid our questions must have seemed!).

We would highly recommend Timotay to anyone who is looking to achieve an outside sensory garden environment like Lewis’. They have been excellent from the start to finish.”

Lewis and his family would also like to say a heartfelt thank you to every single person who donated and fundraised for Lewis’ sensory garden through the Tree Of Hope Charity. They stated that the kindness and generosity towards Lewis and the whole family were unending and that they are all eternally grateful.
